I’ll confess, before settling down to read this book, I didn”t know a huge amount about them mostly their actions form the 19th century onwards and some details about the unfortunate case of Charles II, the last Habsburg king of Spain. Up first is The Habsburgs: The Rise and Fall of a World Power by Martyn Rady, which gives a broad overview of Habsburg family history. So I’m going to ring in the new year by having a two-fer special on one of Europe’s best and messiest: The Habsburgs But the lives of royals are always ripe for high drama, if you are into that kind of thing. And now her grandson seems to be taking his turn airing out the dirty laundry, much to people’s delight. And, really, how could they not? Liz the Second-who we all thought was destined to live forever-shockingly popped her clogs last year. For all the royal watching going on right now, its the British Royal Family that’s hugging the spotlight. Too often the destiny of this region has seemed to be to serve as the front line in other people's wars. The Glass Wall features an extraordinary cast of characters-contemporary and historical, foreign and indigenous-who have lived and fought in the Baltic, western Europe's easternmost stronghold. Caught between the giants of Germany and Russia, on a route across which armies surged or retreated, small nations like Latvia and Estonia were for centuries the subjects of conquests and domination as foreign colonizers claimed control of the territory and its inhabitants, along with their religion, government, and culture. Few countries have suffered more from the convulsions and bloodshed of twentieth-century Europe than those in the eastern Baltic region. Max Egremont, author of Some Desperate Glory, tells stories from the "Glass Wall" between Europe and Asia. About the Book "Originally published in 2021 by Picador, Great Britain." Like many people in their 50’s I often think, I’ll do that after I retire. I taught myself to carve wooden spoons and often think I should spend more time doing that…but don’t. My grandmother taught me to knit and sew and I’ve made several articles of clothes and scarves. I love making pottery, bread, and cooking from scratch. So how have we changed now that we seldom use hand tools, and our hands are most often busy using a computer or phone? Are these the same kind of tools as a wood lathe, a knife and cutting board, or a needle and thread? Human development is attributed to our opposable thumb and ability to make and use tools. I love handling a kitchen tool that belonged to my grandmother. Tools were both functional as well as art. Human prehistory is described by the tools and artifacts left behind. Few people still work with their hands, and I often wonder what we have lost in this process? What have we lost when we no longer enjoy or even know how to make things with our hands? Over the last 50 years store bought products have replaced handmade goods. Only a few generations ago we made many things by hand. Unfortunately, due to the fragile nature of the original camera negative film, access to the microfilm is limited until it can be transferred to a more suitable format.
